The Programme
The Facilitating Sustainability Programme, commissioned by GOL (Government Office of London) and delivered by the LEC (London Environment Centre), is an innovative programme that aims to help organisations integrate and improve environmental good practice in the work place.
Success!
The original programme, delivered from October 2004 until October 2006, has been considered a great success by all involved and has been extended until May 2008.
Designed for a wide range of organisations
The programme is the first of its kind and supports European Social Fund project deliverers in London. It has been designed with many different and supportive components that allowed the 320+ project deliverers to choose how best to implement change in their organisation/project. The range of organisations is vast including large colleges, universities and local councils, private companies and voluntary groups and charities, based in London and UK-wide.
Many levels of support
Each organisation attends two compulsory workshops, 6 months apart and is asked to sign up to an action plan that covers at least two areas of environmental management (i.e. such as energy or waste). A third voluntary workshop was given to start to explore Education for Sustainable Development. All organisations who participated in the programme were able to take advantage of having a free Environmental Audit and be selected to work towards the Green Mark award.
Learning and Skills Council Research
The Learning and Skills Council is funding research into the programme to inform how they deliver milestones for providers in its Sustainability Strategy: From Here to Sustainability.

Feedback
"At the start we never dreamed we could go all the way to achieving the Green Mark award! We are committed to continue this into the future, not only because it will help us with funding, but because we want to do our bit"
Gloria Miqueles, Elevate Project Manager, Women's Resource Centre - ESF Project Provider
"We felt that like there were lots of things that we should and shouldn't be doing and we were not quite sure where to start. The programme allowed us to focus and breakdown the way we look at things. We didn't have to reinvent the wheel. The programme allows you how to look at your business, divide up what you do and reduce your footprint."
Jane D'Aulby, General Manager, Chickenshed - ESF Project Provider
"The feedback was universally good and we were pleasantly surprised because it was compulsory for providers to attend. They really got into it and the action plans meant that they left the training having a clear picture of how they could implement good practice back at their projects."
Christopher Shaw, ESF Projects Manager, LSC London West
